Portsmouth Photo Walks: Some Favourite Images

09.06.2026

This is a place with so many names. Portsmouth. Pompey. Strong Island.

Regardless of what you might know it as, there’s no doubting that this is somewhere that is proud to fiercely eschew pretension, and punches so far above its own weight when it comes to personality and character.

Catch it at the right moment, and this is a place that can be devastatingly good-looking too, as I’m hoping this selection of photographs will amply demonstrate.

2026 marks the centenary of Portsmouth finally attaining city status, so it seems especially timely to tip one’s hat to this grand old Hampshire stalwart. Its relative youth in terms of its status is matched by a boundless, madcap energy, and it’s a creative powerhouse that gives far bigger urban centres a serious run for their money.

The following is a selection of some of my favourite images, captured on numerous walks around the city over the last few years, camera in hand. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I did making them.
